All animals at the Gordon County Animal Shelter should be considered urgent. Stray animals have a 3 day hold.

Adoption:

To Adopt a pet at Gordon County Animal Shelter, you must fill out an adoption agreement and pay adoption fee. The fee is good toward a *certificate to have your
new pet spayed or neutered and for the rabies shot.
Cats - $50 adoption fee
Dogs - $60 adoption fee
Georgia law requires that any animal adopted from an animal shelter be spayed or
neutered.

Rescues with Georgia License.

The Gordon County Animal shelter MUST have a copy of your license on file. Please include a list of persons able to pull for your organization.
If your license is on file the fee is waived.

Out of State Rescue

The Gordon County Animal Shelter must have a copy of your out of state rescue license
and/or a copy of your 501c3 paperwork on file. Plus you must fill out an adoption application agreeing to spay and neuter the pets pulled. If all paperwork is on file, fee is waived.

We have very few fosters, but we will post on page to try to help you find fosters. It is up to your rescue to interview the people that respond.

When we met her she was getting a break from them (in the adjacent run) and looked very sad. She is very gentle, almost timid. #1380, Pitbull Mix, Gray, Adult (1 year old in March), Male, Loves children and is good with other dogs (per surrendering owner), named Ghost. Ghost is a very handsome, playful, fun dog. He was very well behaved with us and didn't bark at other dogs we walked past his run.

Roxy had only been at the shelter for a short time today and we couldn't convince her to go on a walk with us. I'll get a better photo of her outside soon. He crawled up to us and I even got to pet him, but as the leash came out he retreated back into his run. I'll get him out for a walk soon. Great looking dog. DSH Calico female young adult. I made a couple of photos outside of this sweetie. However, I decided to show exactly how this baby came in today. She was surrendered in this basket with this toy. It is very evident that she was loved. She was surrendered by an elderly lady that is scheduled for a knee replacement. She has already tripped over the cat. The staff told us that she was in tears when she left Chloe. When we took her outside for a photo, she shivered. She is a precious cat. So loving and well cared for. #1405, Border Collie Mix, Black/White, Under 6 Months, Male. This little guy was the first dog we met today. He was very unsure of what he was supposed to do with a leash, so we just carried him. #1400, Chi Mix, Tri Colored, Under 6 Months, Female. One of three little adorable pups we encountered today. She and her siblings are all small, but rather lengthy (maybe some dachshund). #1393, Terrier/Chi, Tan, Gender Not Listed (but I think female), Adult, Available on March 2nd. This little one is very cute, but was a little timid. I was able to pet her, but I didn't want to frighten her by pulling her out of the cage.

Saved, Lost, and Still Available. Feb 23rd 2013.

On my photography blog I tried to post a weekly recap of our success (and failures). I'm gonna start doing that on this blog instead. Photos will be of the Available animals, followed by those that were Rescued/Adopted, and finally those we Lost.

Quite a few dogs had to be vetted before their departure. Winston had to have his torn eye lid repaired as he was neutered. The Golden Retriever had an incident in my car on the way to the vet. He decided to use the back of my SUV as a toilet. Luckily the carrier he was in contained most of the mess...

None of the rescues would be possible without lots of help from the local volunteers, the rescues pulling the dogs, the staff working to help hold the dogs at the shelter for extra time, the cross-posters getting the word out about the animals and networking them, the transporters, and the vet and staff for helping with the vetting. A lot of work is involved in saving every animal. Finally, thanks to all those families that adopted from the shelter. We hope you love your new family member.

Those we lost...
The first puppy died in his cage overnight, the second became very ill and was euthanized.
